What is the Gospel?

UPDATE: I apologize for the format of this one the site editor kind of messed it up.

Interesting topic right? Well one night it just came to me, I realized at youth one night that we are always being told to SHARE the gospel. Which is 100% without a doubt the most important thing we can do. The Great Commission, well it struck me that as we are always being told to share the gospel it has rarely been preached to the congregation at Church. I find it so interesting, that something so fundamental to our faith is not being preached more in the modern day church. Now I’m not bashing the Church or anything, however I cannot let this continue to go unnoticed and I felt led to say something about it and then to preach the Gospel. In todays Church almost every sermon you hear , you get bits and pieces of the Gospel and we slowly begin to piece them together over time until we get a decent picture of what it looks like. When we do this however we are never able to actually put together a full picture if we don’t look into the Bible for what god says the Gospel actually is.

This sermon is geared towards two groups of people.

  1. Non Christians seeking out the Gospel, it will be presented to you as you continue to read.
  2. Current Christians who have never heard the entire Gospel preached out, probably a shocking number of you. I am not trying to re save you, as you are already Christians. However read carefully and study, because we need to be sharing the Gospel with everyone. So its just as if not more important that you listen up and take heed.
Ok so lets go ahead and get started, what is the Gospel?
Simply put the Gospel is the teaching of the revelation of Christ.
Paul put it into pretty basic terms in 1st Corinthians lets take a look;
1st Corinthians 15:1-8
Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
So the Gospel in a nut shell(If you will) this in basic terms is the Gospel of Christ.
Did you know that the word Gospel is used in the New Testament over 75 times, like wow that’s a lot and that is a great example of how much God stressed the importance of First knowing the Gospel and then Sharing it.
Lets go ahead and take a look at another verse that does not directly say the word Gospel, but it portrays its beauty in such a way that is so powerful.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life

The gospel is the message that Jesus died in our place for our sins as a substitutionary atonement. He was buried and he rose from the dead, proving that he was the Son of God himself. In the most famous verse of Scripture Jesus said that whoever believes in him has eternal life.

Yes, it’s that simple! It’s so simple that a child can understand it and so jaw-droppingly deep that a Seminary professor can choke on

The best preachers throughout the ages have been equally obsessed by the gospel. From Martin Luther to Martin Lloyd Jones to George Whitefield to Billy Graham the message of the cross was the engine that drove each of their sermons to believers and unbelievers alike. Charles Spurgeon was once asked, “What is your style of preaching?” His answer was simple and straightforward, “I take my text and make a beeline for the cross.”

When you read the gospels you see overwhelmingly that the disciples preached what? (Every now and again you will see something about money or marriage), however most of the preaching is what? That’s right the Gospel, and the awesome thing is that they were not just preaching to non Christians , they taught both non Christians and Christians the same thing. Why? Because it is equally as important that both groups of people hear it.
The Gospels had to equip the Christians that were listening to spread the Good News, and how else will they do that unless they hear it preached to them. This is why I feel like it is such a big issue because when it is not being preached and the importance of the gospel is not being stressed, then Christians will take it lightly and when Christians take it lightly they will not spread it as effectively.
Here is something that I found for you to memorize and use it to help you share the Gospel. Do not use this as your only tool, but it is something handy to add to your arsenal;
God created us to be with him.
Our sins separate us from God.
Sins cannot be removed by good deeds.
Paying the price for sin, Jesus died and rose again.
Everyone who trusts in him alone has eternal life.
Life with Jesus starts now and lasts forever.
Here is a really cool illustration that I found and I really think it helps put our Christian walk and duties into perspective.
Scripture memory needs to be memorized, while you are sharing the gospel being able to quote scripture is an awesome tool, you are able to share truths that are straight from the Bible. However a lot of Christians tend to not want to memorize scripture or they are just to dang lazy.
If you want to play guitar well what ARE THE FIRST STEPS to being able to play.
1. Get the guitar
2. MEMORIZE chords
3.Share your music with people.
Well lets go ahead and compare this to the Christian walk.
1. Become a Christian(Get your guitar)
2. Memorize Scripture and get to know the Gospel. (Memorizing Chords)
Do you see the parallel? Is it starting to make sense why Scripture Memory is so important? I hope so, you see you cannot effectively share the Gospel with people if you do not know your Scripture. In the same way you cannot effectively play the guitar if you don’t know any chords. You can strum the strings all you want, but it wont come to harmony until you get the chords down. You can beat around the bush with the Gospel but until you truly understand it and prepare yourself you will be unable to spread the word in an effective manner.
Here are some stats that I found that really shock me!!!!

It’s clear that many Americans — including Christians don’t know their Bible. Just look at the numbers from a recent study:

  • More than 60 percent of Americans can’t name either half of the Ten Commandments or the four Gospels of the New Testament.
  • Some 80 percent including “born again” Christians believe that “God helps those who help themselves” is a direct quote from the Bible.
  • And 31 percent believe a good person can earn his/her way into heaven.

And even though the Bible is very clear about the sinless nature of Christ, 22 percent believe that Jesus sinned while he was on the earth.

The big piece to that equation is that, that statistic INCLUDED CHRISTIANS!!!!!!!!!! What are we doing??? We need to be equipping Christians to share the Gospel to the Americans who cannot name the 10 commandments. How can we possibly get the gospel out if we cannot even get the word out to people who claim to know Christ. Keep in mind this statistic was taken by secular people and Christians, these Christians that were interviewed attend church on a regular basis. So what does that say about the people who do know the Gospel?? We need to be sharing it now more than ever!

So I challenge you tonight to pray, and ask God to help prepare you! Ask for opportunities to share and ask God to help you seek out the opportunities. You see they are not just going to come up to our doorstep. We have to actively seek out the chances to share the gospel and then ACUALLY SHARE IT!
