Desensitized – To The Power of God!

Welcome to part one of a 3-part series!

Before I start I want to clarify that this series will not discuss becoming desensitized to sin, and this is why. I understand that yes it is a problem and It would fit great in this sermon series. However that topic is so over covered I plan to branch out from the norm, I want to make this series one that makes you think, not something that the church already over preaches. With that being said, lets begin!

All-Powerful – having complete power; almighty:

Do you truly believe that God is All – Powerful? I want you to be brutally honest with yourself. telling yourself that He is all powerful and truly believing it are two completely different things.

Now what If I told you that right here off the bat, right out of the cage that we are all guilty of doing this, even if you don’t believe that you are. More than likely there was a time in your life that you felt like God couldn’t handle your situation. It happens to all of us, its literally in our nature. Now my words right here on your computer screen are not going to change your outlook on God’s power. However take some time right now to pray that God opens your heart to what is about to be said, because I have full faith that if you go into this with an open heart  God will reveal something in your life that you could change.

“Dear God I pray that right now as I am writing this sermon that you will give me the wisdom to tell the readers everything that you want them to know. Lord I pray for every reader that comes across this sermon that you will soften their heart right now even at the time of publication. Lord work a miracle in their life and show them the POWER that you have. Lord I pray that you soften the hearts and open the minds of everyone reading, Lord bless them in only ways that you can.”    -Amen

A while back I had this co-worker, who was a really funny person, in fact he was hilarious. Now the thing about funny people though is that they tend to push the limits, if you know what I mean. Think of your high school class clown, now I’m not judging but they probably had taken the trip to the office once or twice. Why? because they were always pushing the limits. Now back to my co-worker, he was acting like a high school class clown, while working, well, He had been working for the company for a while now and thought that it would be hard for him to get in trouble because well he had seniority. He became desensitized to the power that the management had in the line of succession. So when he continued to push the boundaries, he was SHOCKED to find that he had been fired. (Now do not take this as being fired from being a Christian that cant happen, just for the sake of an example however this one made sense. John 6:37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out.)

I know that we as Christians do this all the time in our walk with Christ, like all the time.

“I have been a Christian for 5 years, I can watch an extremely inappropriate movie because I know that I am forgiven and, it wont effect me that much.”

“I know that Grace is here, so when I go have sex with that girl I’m forgiven, so its alright if I mess up once.”

The list goes on and on… and our thinking never seems to change, I truly believe that if we understood just a small amount of the power that God really has we would quickly realize that, that mindset is wrong. You can sit there and agree with me all you want from the other side of your computer, but when the times comes and you are tempted and you have to make the decision we make the wrong one. Its because we are desensitized to God and his power.

  • We are DESENSITIZED to Gods POWER

Lets take a look at a story in the book of Acts.

Acts 5:1-10

Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.

Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”

When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.

About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”

“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”

Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

Now lets dissect this for a second, YES, this is the New Testament God(There is no shift or change in Gods between the old and new Testament, its just I hear all the time that there is. the same God that delivered Moses and the Israelites. Is the same God that died for you on the cross.)

Ananias LIED to the Holy spirit and HE KILLED HIM! Wow, how many of you have read this is the past and just sat in awe. I mean I used to just fly over this, and not give a care. However now that I read it I can’t do anything but just sit in awe, because of the true power that God has. Do not TEST GOD, because He has all the power in the palm of His hand.  Gods authority is not something to be tested. We are submit to the power of God, we are to submit to the AUTHORITY that God has over us.

Matthew 8:31-33

31 The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”

32 He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men.

Do you see HOW terrified the demons are? They begged JESUS! BEGGED, I mean have you ever truly begged for something? Have you begged for something that really matters? Have you begged for someone to SPARE your LIFE. If you are in a situation when you have to BEG for someone to spare your life, then I can assure you, that you are experiencing true terror. The demons trembled in the presence of Jesus. Why? Because every force of evil is under the authority of Jesus, and they had to listen to whatever Jesus said.

That is the Jesus we worship, we worship a God who demands DEMONS out, and the demons don’t only listen, but tremble while doing so.

Lets take a look a little bit earlier in chapter 8 of Matthew.

Matthew 8:23-27

23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

Matthew 8, is truly a chapter all about the authority of God, the POWER that He possesses. even the elements of the earth OBEY GOD.

  • When we are desensitized to the power of God, we are of little faith!

ITs a bold claim, but when we put God into a box, when we don’t realize everything that HE can do, we don’t realize the AUTHORITATIVE POWER that God has. We put God in a box, and we don’t trust Him as we should.

Matthew 8:1-4

When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy[a] came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

  • Lord, if You are willing: The leper had no doubt whatsoever about the ability of Jesus to heal. His only question was if Jesus was willing to heal.
    • This is a big and important statement, I mean the word willing we normally would not give a hoot about. However it makes all the difference in this scenario. the leper had full faith that Jesus could heal him, God had the power to heal him completely. He completely humbled himself before the Lord, and submitted to the authority of God.

  • Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean: This leper sought more than healing. He wanted cleansing; not only from the leprosy, but also from all its terrible effects on his life and his soul.

  • Jesus put out His hand and touched him: This was a bold and compassionate touch from Jesus. The idea is that the leper kept his distance from Jesus, but He put out His hand and touched him. It was against the ceremonial law to touch a leper, which made the touch all the more meaningful to the afflicted man. Of course, as soon as Jesus touched him, he was no longer a leper!

Now look at everything Jesus does for this man, He not only heals him from his leprosy. He CLEANSES HIM! There is a difference between the word heal, and cleanse. Here is an example.

In the Old Testament the Jews had to sacrifice pure animals every year for their sins. This was something that had to be done every year, and was a recurring thing. However once Jesus had died on the cross, the need to do that had ended, why? Because we had been cleansed. Healing is a good parallel to the Old Testament forgiveness, and cleanse to the New Covenant Grace.

Matthew 8 is a fantastic representation of Jesus’s power and His authority. He commands the elements to behave, sicknesses to be cleansed, and demons to be cast out. WE SERVE AN ALL POWERFUL, ALL MIGHTY, AND HOLY FATHER!!! when WE BEGIN TO GET THAT THROUGH OUR HEAD WE SLOWLY START TO REALIZE HOW MUCH OF A BIG DEAL THIS IS.

Francis Chan gives this example (Paraphrased)

God CANNOT, and will NOT be in the presence of sin, this is why we need JESUS. You see the idea of sin cannot be even a thought in the presence of GOD. If God were to tear open this roof right now, and look down at you, you would instantly DIE. We are sin, and God cannot be in the presence of it. Without Jesus, God would have nothing to do with us because of our sinful nature. THAT IS WHY JESUS IS SO IMPORTANT. God loves you and he doesn’t want to have to forget about you. He loves you so much that He sacrificed HIS SON FOR YOU!

Guys if this doesn’t get you pumped up I honestly don’t know what will, because we are talking about the creator, the king of kings, the LORD OF LORDS. Imagine if the king of the most powerful country ever wanted to have a personal relationship with you. You would probably be pretty stoked. Now take that feeling and exponentially increase it. THE GOD OF ALL WANTS TO KNOW YOU.

We have not only disrespected God by the way we treat the way He loves us, but we denounce Him as God of our lives when we don’t acknowledge Him as God.

  • We are a people of DEPENDENCY, we just depend on the wrong things.

We need to make the mindset of making God first in our lives at the top of our priority. You see if we do not have God at the top of our lives, then there is no possible way we can take Him out of the box, because we have put something from earth above Him. Only when we have God at the top (Or center) of our lives, is when we can begin to un desensitized to HIS POWER.

JESUS never had a beginning, he is JUST THERE. We must succumb to his authority, and POWER. We are a shadow, to the POWER OF GOD. He is never-changing, he is all-powerful, he is our sustainer and our righteousness. Gods knowledge makes the library of CONGRESS LOOK LIKE A MATCH BOX, His knowledge makes all the info on the internet look like a 1940’s farmers almanac. We must KNOW the supremacy of Gods WISDOM, HIS POWER, HIS AUTHORITY. God cannot be counseled by any being on the earth. God holds everything above, on, and under the earth in HIS HAND. God can raise the dead, walk on water, and heal the sick. God never sinned, He never had a millisecond of LUST, OR BAD THOUGHTS. God is JUST and PERFECT. God is PATIENT and FULL OF STEADFAST LOVE. God keeps all of His promises, and Lives out every covenant. We must KNOW THE AUTHORITY of HIS GRACE. His grace JUSTIFIES the un-Godly, and saves the wicked. It delivers us from eternal death that we completely deserve. His grace brings us into right sight with God, and it saves us from facing Gods eternal wrath, that is storing up for those who have not repented. We are made to know CHRIST, we are not made to worship ungodly earthly objects. We are created to WORSHIP OUR CREATOR. God is sovereign over every animal from the GIANT blue whale to the smallest microscopic killer virus. He is over every cancer cell, and vaccination that the doctors give us. God is supreme over every member of ISIS, and AL QUEIDA, God is supreme over all education and over every research academy to ever be established on the face of the earth.

  • THERE IS NOT ONE SQUARE INCH ON PLANET EARTH OVER WHICH THE RISEN CHRIST DOES NOT SAY MINE!!!!

Are you starting to get the picture?

And although it may not seem to you know that God holds this kind of power and authority, it is only a matter of very short time, before Jesus returns with all the Glory of GOD BEHIND HIM.

Lord, I pray that as we go out into our daily lives that we become a people who desire you. We are made to know you Lord, please give us the want to pursue you. Lord, give us the undying passion to know you. Lord this week work on my heart, work in me, conform my thoughts to those of your heart. Allow the words that come from my mouth be the meditations of your heart. Lord allow me to go our and serve you this week, allow me to faithfully be willing to DIE for your cause. Lord I am all in and ready t go. Just send me. HERE I AM.

I love you, praise You, and Thank you.

-Amen
