Google Dictionary defines it as such –
an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law:
What a poor view of sin that our culture has today, and it saddens me greatly. I think once we begin to understand the true result of sin, and what we deserve once we commit the sin, we begin to be appalled and revolted by how disgusting sin is.
I am sure we have all heard the phrase “If you sin you are rejecting God and His love for you.” and actually that is a very accurate description of what it is like to sin, and if you didn’t feel queasy when you read that I would re read it. Every time you feel a sliver of bitterness, you are rejecting God. Every time you feel the slightest form of pride bubbling up inside you, you are rejecting God, there is no exception and there is no way around it.
29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.
So what is this passage saying? It is giving you a very good picture of what will happen if are outside of Gods kingdom. It is saying that it is better for me to never hold my child, EVER, it is saying that it is better for me to never be able to drive again, and it is saying that it is better that I never see my (Future) kids throwing ball or at their dance recite, than for me to be outside of Gods kingdom. And as Christians if we are calling the Bible true, than that is what this verse is saying. God is so much better than any of those things.
In Matt Chandlers book “The Explicit Gospel” He puts it this way;
“As I write this March Madness is going on. It is the greatest sporting event. But here is the thing about fallen men and women who love march madness. All over the country fans are nervous. I’m not joking, they are truly nervous in their guts, they want their team to win so badly. they watch the games and yell at their televisions . “No, Yes, Go, WOOHOOO.” Kids are crying in fear, wives are running to the kitchen to grab more nachos – it is truly chaos. It’s madness. With victory comes elation and surfing thousands of websites to read the same article over and over again. With defeat comes destitution of spirit and days of mourning and moping, angrily arguing on a blog about who really deserved to win.
Every bit of that emotion was given to us by God for God, not for basket ball. Where is the nervousness in our guts when were coming into an assembly of those pursuing God? Where is the elation over the resurrection? Where is the desolation over our sins? Where is it? Well its on basketball, its on football, its on romance, and its on tweeting. ”
Have you ever heard of Hab 1:5?
Lets read it
Look at the nations and watch– and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.
This is one of the most miss interpreted verses in all of scripture. you walk into your local Life Way and you are bound to see t-shirts and coffee mugs with this verse on it. You may even own one of those things! Its just so funny how people think that this verse is talking about how we cant even fathom the amazing things that God is going to do in our lives. so many Christians think this means that God is going to bless them in ways that they can’t even conceptually render. However if we just took some time to read the Bible in context you see that what God means by this verse is that He is going to kill everyone. So sorry to burst your bubble on that verse, but contextually that is what it means. We deserve that out come because of our sin, we deserve complete and utter desolation for the slightest of infractions.
4 “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.
I think this is Gods way of saying “seriously you are scared of these people….You more scared of what people can do to you, compared to what I can do to you!, SERIOUSLY… the worst they can do is kill you.”
Lets realize what SIN actually is, and when we begin to do that, we can THEN begin to understand how fortunate we are for Grace.
Thank you guys Love all of you!
