Big thank you to Noah for writing El Elyon, The Most High God!
El Elyon- The Most High God
This name is a really special one. I really believe that this has serious life changing power if we really dig in, so lets do it! We first see this name used in Genesis 14:18, and it is used 28 times throughout the Old Testament. Now lets get into what the name actually means.
So as you can see in the title the name has two parts. The first being El, that translates most literally into God. Secondly is Elyon, this is translated to Most High. So obviously when you combine the two, you get The Most High God, or God The Most High. Now that we know what the definition is let get into what it means to each of us.
Lets look at Genesis 14:18-20 to see how its used, “And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” Also, we will look at psalm 57:2, “I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.”
Now what do we get from the context of these verses? When God Most High is used it is denoting God’s Majesty and Sovereignty. In Genesis 14 it talks about him being the Possessor of heaven and earth, which obviously points to his Majesty as Creator and Master over all creation. In Psalm 57 the psalmist is referencing God as El Elyon because he knows that because of God’s absolute Sovereignty, God will fulfill his purpose in him. This has insane meaning for us in our daily lives. When we look at a vibrant sunset, the night sky filled with the stars that our creator lovingly put there, or any part of creation our affections cant stop on those things. Now we know God as El Elyon and that should create in us thanksgiving for revealing to us his majesty, our affections should be stirred up and praise to roll past creation and onto the creator. In every situation, we can trust in Gods sovereignty that he has us. In the good times, we can trust and praise him for bringing us there. And in the bad, we can wrap ourselves up in the beautiful truth of his sovereignty like a warm blanket on a cold night.
Lord I pray that you help every person who reads this to really get it. To let us see you as you really are God as incomprehensibly loving, All-powerful, and gloriously beautiful. We Love you Lord but help us love more.
