1 John 4:8-10
“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God shower his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”
God is the source of our love, “His very essence and makeup and character is love defined.” He loves us enough to sacrifice his Son for us. Jesus is our example of what it means to love; everything he did in life and death was supremely loving. John says, “God is love,” not “Love is God” do not let our world with its selfish views of love turn around these words and our understanding of true love. “The world thinks that love is what makes a person feel good and that it is all right to sacrifice moral principles and other rights in order to obtain such “love”. But that isn’t real love; it is the exact opposite and God is not that kind of “love”. Real love is like God, who is holy, just, and perfect. if we truly know God, we will love as he does.” C.S. Lewis goes on to say the living, dynamic activity of love has been going on in God forever and has created everything else. This love works through us, and if we want to truly love as God does, we must draw close to him. As we love by the power of this Spirit, we share in the life, death, resurrection, and love of Christ. In verses 9 and 10 love explains why God creates, why God cares, why we are free, why Christ died and why we receive eternal life. I pray out of this whole devotion you will take back with you that true love is not based on feelings alone, but grounded in deep eternal truths. This kind of love comes out of who God is and God is love.
